3rd CIRP School “Manufacturing and Measurement of Freeform Optics”

The 3rd CIRP School, organized by the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), will convene in Tianjin, China, from May 11th to 16th, 2026. Chaired by Prof. Fengzhou Fang, the event is designed to explore the forefront of freeform optics technology, spanning their design, manufacturing, metrology, and applications. Hosted by a taskforce of international experts, this edition builds on the success of prior schools to deliver a comprehensive curriculum tailored for researchers and practitioners in precision engineering.

Over five intensive days, attendees will explore the mathematical and computational underpinnings of freeform design, master advanced manufacturing techniques such as ultra-precision machining and additive processes, and delve into state-of-the-art metrology strategies for achieving nanometric accuracy. The curriculum blends theoretical lectures with hands-on workshops, providing practical experience with industry-relevant tools and methodologies. Discussions will extend to real-world applications, including advanced optics, biomedical devices, and emerging technologies in virtual/augmented reality. Over five days, teams will engage in in-depth discussions, iterative problem-solving, and preliminary research design, culminating in a final presentation session on Friday afternoon (May 15th). This session will showcase innovative proposals and foster cross-disciplinary dialogue among peers and experts.

Targeting PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and industry professionals, the program prioritizes CIRP Corporate Members and Research Affiliates, though it remains open to all qualified applicants.  Early application is encouraged due to limited seating capacity.
