The Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), founded on May 21, 1936, is a national learned organization engaged in the promotion of the art and science of mechanical engineering. CMES was chartered as a legal person at the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People¡¯s Republic of China.
CMES¡¯ major function is to promote development of the art and science of mechanical engineering, organize academic activities, carry out training and continuing engineering education activities, publicize technical information, provide inter-media service and safeguard the legal rights and interest of its membership.
The membership of CMES is divided into two categories: individual member and corporate member. All individual members are graded as member and senior member. For the benefit of those who live in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao as well as in other countries, CMES offers two special membership: 1) Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macao membership; 2) Overseas membership. At present, CMES has over 170,000 individual members and more than 4,000 corporate members throughout the world. CMES covers a much broader technical area than that of mechanical engineering usually defined. 34 technical institutions and over 300 technical committees have been set up to organize technical activities throughout the country.
CMES has established working relations with more than 80 technical organizations from 60 countries, and CMES is also the member of 11 international professional organizations.
International conference and exhibition is one of major means of CMES to develop its international exchange and cooperation with foreign counterparts. During the past 20 years, CMES has organized over 800 international technical conferences and more than 90 events of different kinds of international exhibitions. Over 2.2 millions participants get involved in these activities. The China International Industry Fair and the Beijing Essen Welding Fair are the two authentic and influential exhibitions organized by CMES, and are fully supported by various government departments.
